Redefining Wealth: Why True Prosperity Isn’t About Numbers

When most of us hear the word “wealth,” our minds jump straight to numbers—account balances, investment portfolios, or that elusive “someday” figure we hope to reach.

But the truth is, wealth is so much bigger than money.

It’s the sound of laughter around your dinner table.
It’s waking up without dread on a Monday morning.
It’s having the freedom to say “yes” to opportunities you want and “no” to those that don't serve you.

Wealth, at its best, is about how fully you get to live your life... not just how much money you have stashed away.

The Trap of Chasing “More”

It’s easy to slip into the mindset that wealth is always out there somewhere, waiting to greet us when we start earning more or saving more. But if we only define wealth as a number, the finish line will continue to move and we’re less likely to be satisfied, even if we catch up to it.

Think about it:

  • When you were younger, maybe still in school or just starting your career, did you imagine you’d feel secure at an arbitrary salary—once I make $80K, I’ll be set—only to raise the bar as soon as you got there?
  • Have you ever bought something you thought would bring happiness, only to feel the same restlessness a few weeks later?

That’s the trap: chasing numbers instead of noticing the life those numbers are supposed to support.

A New Definition of Wealth

What if we redefined wealth to mean:

  • The peace of mind that comes from knowing your needs are met.
  • The joy of having time and energy for people and passions that light you up.
  • The security of knowing you’re prepared for what life brings.
  • The ability to give generously, whether through money, time, or kindness.

Suddenly, “wealth” looks a lot less like a finish line and more like a practice. A way of living.

A Small Step to Try This Week

Take a moment to step away from the numbers. Instead, ask yourself:

  1. What three things in my life make me feel truly wealthy—without spending a dime?
(Examples: taking PTO without feeling guilty, playing with your kids, a favorite hobby, good health, community support.)
  2. How can I protect or nurture those things through my financial choices?
(Examples: Prioritizing health-related spending, setting aside savings for family experiences, or simplifying expenses to gain more time freedom.)

This shift helps you see money not as the end goal, but as the tool that safeguards what you value most.

Living Richly, Right Now

Wealth doesn’t begin the day your account hits a certain number. It begins the moment you start living in alignment with what matters most to you.

So, ask yourself: when you picture a truly “wealthy” life, what do you see? And how can your money serve that vision—starting today?

Your turn: Write down your top three definitions of wealth that have nothing to do with money. Then, pick one small way your financial choices this month can support those definitions.
